Venous Ulcers Macon, Georgia

Dark red, purple or brown skin discoloration of the legs may be the beginning stages of a venous ulcer. A venous, or stasis ulcer, is a shallow ulcer that develop as a result of venous reflux.  Typically these ulcers are seen on the medial aspect of the lower leg.

If you delay treatment for venous reflux the risk of a venous ulcer increases. At the ulcer stage, you may experience painful and swollen legs. Poor blood flow and skin nutrition may make venous ulcers slow to heal.

Causes of Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers develop as reflux allows venous blood to pool in your leg. This reflux may be the result of saphenous vein, perforator vein or non-saphenous vein reflux.  As fluid leaks out of the dilated veins into the surrounding tissues, swelling interferes with the movement of oxygen and nutrients into these tissues and waste products away resulting in inflamation tissue damage and venous ulcer formation.

Treatment of Venous Ulcers

Dr. Harper uses effective methods to treat the underlying venous reflux including:  Endovenous procedures 'Radiofrequency Cosure' of the refluxing Saphenous veins or impcompetent perforator veins, ambulatory phlebectomy, ligation of perforator veins and sclerotherapy. Many patients report that their ulcers heal quickly after correction of the underlying venous reflux.
